Take a look at the Winter Barley Varieties we have available for Autumn 2019. Craft, KWS Orwell, KWS Cassia and KWS Infinity.

Craft

  • Craft has been around since 2016 but remains a reliable 2-row malting barley with a good demand from local maltsters.
  • Suitable for all regions and offers low screenings and a decent specific weight of 69.3 kg/hl.
  • It has a good disease package and is a stiff-strawed variety, with a lodging resistance rating of 8, the highest of all the two-row malting varieties on the RL.
  • Resistant to the common strains of barley mosaic viruses (BaYMV strain 1 and BaMMV).

KWS Infinity

  • A 2-row feed barley suitable for all regions but performs best in the North.
  • A decent specific weight of 68.0 kg/hl and reasonable disease package but needs watching for mildew.
  • Resistant to the common strains of barley mosaic viruses (BaYMV strain 1 and BaMMV).
  • KWS Infinity is no longer on the RL but remains a popular feed variety for growers.

KWS Orwell

  • A high yielding 2-row feed variety with good stem stiffness and a high resistance to lodging.
  • KWS Orwell offers a strong disease package, although has a weakness to mildew which needs to be monitored.
  • Resistant to the common strains of barley mosaic viruses (BaYMV strain 1 and BaMMV).
  • Performs well on both light and heavier soils and is a popular choice for feed growers that have liked KWS Tower and KWS Glacier in the past.

KWS Cassia

  • KWS Cassia remains an extremely popular choice for many of our customers despite it being on the RL since 2010.
  • Its consistent yields and outstanding specific weight of 71.0 kg/hl, still stands out from any other varieties, which is why many growers stick with it.
  • It performs well across all regions, and although varieties such as KWS Tower and KWS Orwell have yielded higher in official trials it remains a reliable on farm performer.
  • This variety has decent stiff straw with a lodging resistance rating of 8.0, however there are better varieties on the market for disease resistance. Mildew and Rhynchosporium need monitoring closely.
  •  Resistant to the common strains of barley mosaic viruses (BaYMV strain 1 and BaMMV).
